KBIA's Trevor Harris always comes up an interesting angle that makes me think A LOT after every interview.
*Disclaimer* There are many other outdoor venues, of course (Chautauqua, Edmonton, NYC Central Park) but the three places I mentioned (Aspen, Ravinia and Tanglewood) I was also a participant over various summers. Check out this article with quotes also by Chris Campbell (Executive Director, Missouri Symphony Society) and Dr. Rob Shay (Director, MU School of Music). http://kbia.org/post/can-classical-music-work-outdoors http://m.columbiatribune.com/arts_life/community/performances-showcase-area-s-depth-of-talent/article_335d2904-cf9d-11e2-ab86-10604b9f7e7c.html http://www.kbia.org/post/columbia-performance-series-presents-classical-music-show-me-state With their stunning performance at the Finals Concert, Project Fusion saxophone quartet from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY) claimed the Grand Prize at the 2013 Plowman Chamber Music Competition yesterday at the Missouri Theatre in Columbia.

He and his wife Lina have been prominent supporter of music in Columbia, particularly Missouri Symphony Society and Plowman, for which they have donated one of the top awards for 5 years. If you would like express your condolence and thank Lina for all that they did for Plowman and in Columbia, please write via First Baptist Church at 1112 E Broadway, Columbia MO 65201.
Rest in peace, Harry. ...The Berriers were members of First Baptist Church, as well as big supporters of music in Columbia. They have come to a number of Odyssey concerts, but perhaps the most memorable one for me is the one we gave some years ago, a children's concert on a Sunday afternoon - and we performed Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals. After the performance, he and Lina came up towards the stage to congratulate us - and somehow, it forever stuck in my mind his cowboy hat and matching belt buckle. And they were both so friendly! He will be greatly missed by everyone in this community and beyond. But his feisty, infectious energy and generosity will forever be remembered! The two recent snow storms in Columbia actually brought me some unplanned, extra time to reflect peacefully and work effectively.
Last Saturday, my family and I attended our dear friend Fran Rikli's memorial service. Fran was a special friend: She always wanted to see how I was doing, to ask if I was happy and how my Japanese was keeping up, and even to extend her friendship to my mother visiting from Japan for the past four years. Last conversation I had with Fran was at Lenoir Woods when Peter and I gave a four-hand concert in December. I will forever be grateful for welcoming strangers like us into her community with open arms, and making us feel right at home. It really is phenomenal people like her that we love the most about Columbia. I will miss playing for her, but will always remember her beautiful smile from the stage. One of my (and probably everyone's) musical heroes, Van Cliburn passed away yesterday. Words cannot summarize his enormous influence to the pianists of many, many generations that follow. So instead, I invite you to a concert he gave in 1958 at the Carnegie Hall, shortly after he won the Tchaikovsky Competition [CLICK HERE]. Speaking of competitions, preliminary judges and I have finished listening to the Plowman Preliminary DVD/CDs. I will be posting the result (ensemble types only) on Plowman web site shortly; be sure to check its BLOG page! SAVE THE DATE - April 7, Sunday 6-8pm after the Plowman Competition Finals Concert. More details are forthcoming... Keep checking our web page, "FUNDRAISER" for updates beginning this Friday, February 22.
